While this restoration is made to be very durable, it isn’t completely resilient to damage. It isn’t unheard of for dental crowns, especially older ones, to fall out. This might not be the most urgent dental emergency you could have, but it is still important to have it addressed as soon as possible. Read on to learn about how you should handle this situation.

Call Your Dentist

If your crown has fallen out, the first thing you should do is try to locate it. If it is still in your mouth, take it out. You should carefully clean the area where your crown was but be gentle. The area may be sensitive. Give your dentist a call at your earliest convenience to schedule an urgent visit. If you are experiencing pain, let them know.

Examine the Area

Take a look at the inside of your crown and remove any debris is you can. Check that none of your natural tooth broke off and became lodged in the crown. Run your tongue over your underlying tooth to carefully check for sharp edges. You don’t want to accidentally hurt the soft tissues in your mouth. If your crown is hollow, you can try to place it back on your tooth for the time being. Check with your dentist to see whether or not adhesive should be used until you can get to the dental office.

Be Careful

Until you go to the dental office, you should avoid both chewy and sticky foods that could cause additional damage. Chew on the opposite side of your mouth and only eat soft foods until the issue has been resolved by your dentist.

Go to the Dental Office

When your appointment rolls around, your dentist needs to take a look to see whether or not your crown can be put back in its place or if you need to have a new one customized for you. Either way, they will thoroughly clean the area and cement the crown or temporary crown in place. If you need a new crown, you will need to come back a few weeks later to have your permanent restoration cemented into place.

If your crown fell out, follow the steps listed above. Your smile will be good as new in just a matter of time!

About the Author

Dr. Austin Amos earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of Texas School of Dentistry in Houston.
