Periodontal Therapy

Protect Your Gums. Protect Your Health.

Gum disease. You’ve probably heard about it all your life, but did you know that it’s actually the most common dental problem in the entire world as well as the leading cause of tooth loss? Early symptoms include bleeding, tender, and swollen gums, and they are often missed. Eventually, this infection can develop into something much more serious, becoming one of the risk factors associated with other diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and even dementia.

At Ridgepointe Dental, we take gum disease very seriously, so during your regular appointments, we will always keep an eye on your gum health. Should you show any signs of this condition, we can utilize an array of treatments known as periodontal therapy to quickly contain it so it won’t ever harm your smile.

Scaling & Root Planing

Woman with beautiful teeth and healthy gumsWhen gum disease is caught early enough, it can typically be treated using something called a “deep cleaning”, which consists of two separate procedures known as scaling and root planing.

With scaling, your hygienist will use small tools to thoroughly break up the plaque and tartar (hardened plaque) located near your gum line, and with root planing, we’ll gently smooth out the rough surfaces of your teeth’s roots. This will make it much harder for plaque to gather on them in the future, lessening your chances of developing gum disease again.
